Little City Diner: Well Worth the Trip to Winterville

Hands down, the Winterville restaurant nails breakfast. And lunch.

Little City Diner is a new restaurant in Winterville, occupying the building on Cherokee Road where Cafe Marigold turned out killer salads and sandwiches. It's been open since mid-September. One of my daughters and I recently went there for a breakfast date, and I'm here to testify that this is one of those places that makes your eyes pop out and your tummy say howdy.

I really wished I were a bovine so I could have filled four chambers full of their tasty food. As it was, I brought the leftovers home to an indignant child--"Why can't I come?"--whose nose slipped back into joint when she consumed the boxes of vegetables and warm, Red Mule grits.

Matthew and Deannan Scott, who live in Winterville, own and run Little City Diner. They also own and run Big City Bread, which is, on the weekend, a destination for those who enjoy waiting in line almost as much as eating breakfast. It has become so popular with both the before-church and the after-church crowds that I have given up getting in. Now, I don't have to even try any more. With Little City Diner turning out pumpkin pancakes, perfect over-easy eggs and delicious sauteed vegetables, I will happily drive out to Winterville for weekend brunch. There isn't a lovely outdoor setting at Little City as there is at Big City, but if you have a whiny, hungry child in tow, aesthetics matter less than foodstuffs.

The menu is filled with delicious-sounding dishes. Friends in Winterville who eat there regularly rave about the omelets, the hotcakes and the biscuits. You can get a biscuit with bacon, ham or sausage; with eggs in various states; with cheese; or with smoked salmon. You can even go back in time to Granny's kitchen and enjoy a biscuit with sawmill gravy.

For lunch, there are salads, soups and sandwiches. Does that sound too bland? I want to say more, but I haven't eaten lunch there. If we can rely on the endorsements of friends and friends of friends, however, the lunch, like the weekday breakfast and Sunday brunch, is worth a drive. There's a daily blue plate special that gives you an entree, corn cakes and two side dishes. And they have lunch selections for kids that don't include "nugget" among the dishes.

Look, here are the lunch menu and the breakfast menu. Make your selection and then go. Notice the salt and pepper shakers on the tables, by the way. They're all different. My daughter was delighted.
