Tattoo'ed Clothes for Kids--Cute? Funny? Disturbing?

Now your children can look as though they have tattoos.

Two of my three nephews have tattoos. We’re not talking a full sleeve. One has a Bible verse on the inside of one arm, the other has various literary figures scattered on parts of his body seen by only his wife and physician.

One has two little daughters. I’m not sure what he will say when or if his children want to get tattoos. Maybe the current craze for body art will have abated by the time they are young women.

In the meantime, a company called The Tattoo’d Tyke is offering clothes for infants—onesies--and toddlers—shirts--that look as though the wearer is sporting two full sleeves. To those not familiar with tattoo-speak, a full sleeve means your entire arm is inked. There are also tights for girls.

I don’t know if my nephew will buy one of these shirts for his girls. I don’t think I’ll give one for mine. The water soluble tattoos in every birthday prize bag have a half life of about 20 minutes in our house. My children get sick of looking at the same picture on their skin and scrap them off after just a few minutes. I can’t imagine either of them committing to a design for a lifetime.

The people who create and manufacture these shirts are clearly talented, as are many tattoo artists. And they are filling a niche, one that I didn’t even know existed. Perhaps if I were a mom with tattoos, I would feel more comfortable about such clothing for my kid.

So do you think you’ll be buying a Tattoo’d Tyke shirt for your own child? Or someone else’s child?
