Residents of Georgia and more than 40 other states have filed petitions to secede from the United States.
Residents of Alabama, North and South Carolina, New York, Michigan, Texas and other states have filed the petitions under the "We The People" program, featured on the White House website, according to the Huffington Post.
The Georgia petition, which had nearly 30,000 signatures at midday Thursday, quotes from the Declaration of Independence:
"...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..."
The petitions come in the wake of President Obama winning a second term November 6 over Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Romney won the state of Georgia but lost in Clarke County.
The White House website explains of the review process for "We the People" petitions that get 25,000 signatures in a 30-day period: "If a petition meets the signature threshold, it will be reviewed by the Administration and we will issue a response."
