Want to Secede? So what?

One man's thoughts on the silliness of the petition regarding the secession of Georgia from the USA.

Recently I came across an article here on Patch that confirmed a rumor that I've recently heard going around: that there are apparently more than 30,000 Georgia citizens that have signed a petition stating their desire to secede from the United States of America.

According to the previously linked article, the "We the People" program under which this petition is filed states that any petition that "meets the signature threshold", the White House will review it and will "issue a response."

After witnessing the "enthusiasm" with which the anti-Obama crowd responded to his re-election, I'm inclined to believe that the petition is not just some kind of joke. I cannot, however, help myself from wondering how anyone could take a petition like this seriously.

Even if it were a wise idea to promote division and separation among the people of America, is there a possibility of the issued response promised by the White House being anything other than a simple "No?" I suppose that there are at least 30,000 strong who have some belief that there's a possibility for a "Sure, go right ahead," but I am curious about how strongly they believe that.

Who knows, perhaps those who sign this petition are just looking for a way to channel their frustrations or to make a statement.
