Armed Robbery on West Hancock and Other Crimes in Athens, Ga.

Around 4:15am on January 17 officers responded to an armed robbery/home invasion that had just occurred at a West Hancock Avenue residence. One person living there said that earlier in the evening a man came to the residence and asked for money. He gave him an ATM card that had no money on it and the male left. Around 04:15am the man said there was a knock at the door but he ignored it. The front door was then kicked in and three black men rushed in. One suspect was armed with a handgun and demanded the resident’s cell phone and he complied. The suspects also took a video game console. One of the suspects was the man who had come to the residence earlier. The other suspects left the residence and the residents drove the first suspect to Broad and Milledge and dropped him off. They called 911 and drove back to the residence. The stolen items were valued at $400. The first suspect was 5’11” to 6’, around 190 pounds with a scruffy beard; he wore a gray toboggan and green jacket. The suspect with the gun was 6’ to 6’1”, skinny build; he wore a camo boonie hat, white sweatshirt and a red and black puffy vest. The third suspect was 5’5” to 5’7”; possibly wore a black and yellow cap. The investigation continues.

An officer met with a woman from East Paces Drive at Willow Street and North Avenue. She said she was under the North Avenue bridge around 11:20pm on January 16. She was arguing with a person she knew when he threw an object that struck her in the mouth and gashed her lip. EMS responded and transported her to Athens Regional Medical Center. Investigation revealed that the woman had been struck with a dinner plate. The suspect had left before police officers arrived.


A man reported that his Kim Chase Road residence was burglarized between 10pm on January 15 and 8am on January 16. TVs, a laptop with bag, camcorder, and cell phones were stolen. The total value was $2,233. 

A Cooper Springs Court residence owas burglarized between 1:30pm and 5pm on January 16. A laptop and jewelry valued at $360 were stolen. 

Between 8am and 6pm on January 16 a Baxter Drive residence was burglarized. A laptop valued at $100 was stolen. 

A man reported that his Boulder Trace residence was burglarized between 11am and 4pm on January 16. A video game console with controllers valued at $140 were stolen.

A Highland Park Drive residence was burglarized between 7:30pm and 10pm on January 16. Laptops and a video game console with controllers were stolen. The total value was $1,280.

A woman from Norwood Circle said her vehicle was towed as a result of a traffic stop on January 16. Her son was to remove her property from the vehicle before it was towed. Later in the day she realized her son did not remove a bag containing $1,800. When she went to the North Chase Street location to retrieve the money, it was missing. The theft occurred between 8:10am and 1:15pm.

Between 6pm on January 15 and 7:30pm on  January 16 a 2008 Carry Craft trailer owned by a Covington man was stolen from an Old Commerce Rd location. The trailer is 5’ X 10’, black, with a tool box attached and a small motorcycle tire near the front. It displays Georgia tag TL79Y83 and is valued at $4,500.
