Athens Artist Stacey-Marie Piotrowski Hit on Bicycle by Drunk Driver in Athens, Ga.

She was riding her bicycle on Talmadge Drive at 10:30 Wednesday night. A Ford Ranger truck turned into her path and hit her and she flew over the hood, hitting her head on the windshield and sustaining a concussion as well as broken bones.

Now, Stacey-Marie Piotrowski, 28, is lying in a hospital bed with internal injuries and pickup driver Matthew Bryan Andrews, 29, faces a possible felony charge on top of two misdemeanor charges for DUI and failure to yield, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald and a news release from the Athens Clarke County Police.

According to the story, Andrews told police he was on his way home after having a few beers downtown over the course of several hours. But a blood alcohol test showed him at .097, which is legally intoxicated. He hit Piotrowski as he tried to turn from Talmadge onto Willow Run, where he lives.

Stacey-Marie Piotrowski was born in Pittsburgh but "spent some time alternating between academic and the open road" before settling in Athens and earning her BFA from UGA last spring. Materials from the Internet reveal her complicated and interesting photographs. Local bands use her images, her website says, and she has exhibited her photos in Athens and Augusta.

“In an accident like this, where there are no or less severe injuries, motorists are usually charged with failure to yield, but if you are DUI or in the act of driving recklessly, that’s when the felony charge of serious injury by vehicle comes into play,” Lt. Don Eckert told the Athens Banner Herald.
