Athens Clarke County Logs Its Second Homicide of 2013

A man dies of injuries he sustained in a beating by a homeless man.

A homeless man has been charged with homicide after a man he beat savagely died from his injuries.

Wilkes Sanders Wolfe, 50, had been charged with battery for beating Richard Melvin Huff, 46, outside the Red & Black Package Store on Oconee Street a little over a week ago, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald. Huff died on Monday, and the charges against Wolfe, who was in the Clarke County Jail, were changed to homicide.

Witnesses told police that Wolfe knocked Huff to the ground and continued beating him once he was done, the story says. Huff sustained head injuries and was transported to Athens Regional, where he died.

On the same day as the beating, David Mack Collins was shot to death in an Eastside apartment complex.
