Athens Man Arrested for Cocaine Possession, Explains 'A Couple of Drinks' To Police

An Athens man was arrested and charged with cocaine possession and DUI Thursday after explaining to police what having "a couple of drinks" meant, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police report. 

Police first spotted the vehicle parked in front of a building on Fourth Street at about 4 a.m. After following the car towards Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, police attempted to pull the driver over.

Officers followed the car onto Strickland Avenue after the car refused to stop, and continued until it finally came to a stop on Madison Heights. When police asked Telly Edwards, 37, why he didn't stop, he didn't respond at first, and then said he wanted to stop off the main road.

During conversation with Edwards, police smelled a strong alcoholic odor. A beer can was also in the cup holder The officer asked Edwards how much he had to drink and he said a couple. When the officer asked how many a couple was, the man repeated "a couple" and then went on to explain that "a couple was two and a few was three."

Edwards refused to do field sobriety tests or to breathe into the breath analyzer. Edwards was placed under arrest. 

While searching his car, police found a small bag with white rocky substance in it, which tested positively for cocaine.

Edwards was charged with cocaine possession, DUI and open container. He was taken to Clarke County Jail.
