Athens Man Charged with Intent to Sell Crack Cocaine

Police say the arrest was made after a patrol office spotted some suspicious activity on Vine Street. An arrest isn't a conviction.

A suspected drug dealer was jailed early Monday morning after Athens-Clarke County police officers found a bag of crack cocaine they believe was in his possession.

According to police, a patrol officer saw several people hanging out around a fence on Pine Street shortly after midnight, and knowing it to be an area prone to crime and drugs, he pulled into the parking lot.

The officer says he witnessed one of the men walk toward a stairwell at the corner of the building where there is no exit. When the man was asked what he was doing at the stairs, he denied being there, according to the officer.

While one officer stood by with suspect, another searched the area of the stairs and found a clear, plastic bag underneath a piece of paper.

Inside the bag were several small white rocks which field tested positive for cocaine, police said. Notably the bag was clean while all other items around it were dirty, officers said.
