Clarke County Sheriff's Deputy Collapses and Dies at the Jail

The deputy was a 23-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department.

A long-term member of local law enforcement collapsed at the Clarke County Jail a little after midnight on Thursday. He was later pronounced dead at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Lieutenant William "Bill" Morgan, 50, of the Clarke County Sheriff's Department was the B-shift supervisor at the jail, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Department. He collapsed at the jail at 12:15am.

The men and women of his shift, the Jail medical staff, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Clarke County Fire Rescue worked tirelessly to revive him, but weren't successful.

He was promoted to Lieutenant a year ago and served Clarke County for 23 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
