Crime Blotter--Traffic Fatality

Around 8:50pm on December 1, Paul Cohen, 71, of Byron, driving his 2001 Jeep Cherokee, was northbound on US 441 toward Timothy Rd. A 61-year-old female driver was southbound in a 2009 Toyota Corolla. She attempted to turn left to merge onto the Georgia 10 outer loop toward South Milledge Avenue.  As she did, her vehicle was struck in the passenger side by the Cohen vehicle. A 90-year-old man, a passenger in her vehicle, was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries. She was also transported to Athens Regional. A 67-year-old woman from Anchorage, AK, a passenger in the Cohen vehicle, was transported to St Mary's Hospital. The investigation continues. 

 An officer responded to the Ombudsman School, 1063 Baxter St, around 8am on December 1 to a complaint of a student in possession of a knife.  When the police arrived, a teacher told them that a 14-year-old student had a pocketknife in his jacket pocket. The Department of Juvenile Justice ordered him placed in detention, and he was transported to the Sheriff’s Office.  He was charged with Weapon on School Property.

A Sir Matthew Road residence was burglarized between 9:45pm on December 1 and 1:50am on December 2. TVs, DVD player, laptop, and jewelry with a total value of $4,278 were stolen. 

Between 5pm on November 28 and 5pm on November 30, a woman reported that an iPod was stolen from her Riverbend Pkwy residence.  Another person reported that cash was stolen. The total value was $620.  This was reported December 1.
