Crime Blotter--officer assaulted, taffic fatality, burglaries

At approximately 3:40 pm, July 3, ACCPD had contact with a vehicle on the Atlanta Hwy., and determined the driver had a suspended license. The vehicle turned onto Jennings Mill Road, but when the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it continued to the Oconee Connector and then to GA 316. A chase ensued, and an officer ahead of the chase got into position to employ Stop-Sticks to attempt to safely end the pursuit. As the vehicle approached, it swerved towards the deploying officer, causing him to have to jump out of the way to prevent being struck. The vehicle continued up the exit ramp to US 441 South, and at the top of the ramp, hit  another vehicle. The two  occupants of the vehicle that was hit weren’t hurt. Orlando Suntariona Tate, 35, Deer Creek Drive, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Driving Under the Influence, Reckless Driving, Felony Fleeing and Attempting To Elude, Possession of a Schedule II Drug, and Habitual Violator.

At 12:55pm, July 3, ACCPD officers were in the parking lot of Wal Mart, 4375 Lexington Road, investigating a minor accident. At that point, a blue Chevrolet Lumina sped past the officers, almost hitting one  nearly striking one. The Lumina continued westbound through the parking lot, ultimately colliding with and under-riding the trailer of an eighteen-wheeler parked on the western end of the parking lot. The driver, Nathan Dean WAREN, 45, Veribest Road, Lexington, dies at the scene from injuries sustained during the crash. The incident is under further investigation by the ACCPD Traffic Unit.

An employee of , 198 Old Hull Road, entered a vacant unit at that location and discovered the unit had been entered and graffiti had been painted on several walls.

A man returned to his Burkland Drive residence and discovered three young, black males at the rear of his residence attempting to gain entry. When they saw him, they ran towards Catalpa Drive where they got into an older model white Honda and fled the scene. The resident recognized one of the three and directed ACCPD to that suspect’s residence. The attempted burglary is still under investigation, but three suspects have been tentatively identified.

A woman reported that a family member was at home in their Kirby Lane residence when they heard a loud noise at the rear of the residence. When they went to investigate, they discovered a rear window had been forced open and saw one of three suspects climbing through the broken window. When the intruders realized the residence was occupied, they ran off. A potential suspect was identified by the resident. While investigating this incident, ACCPD received another call regarding a burglary-in-progress at a residence on Westchester Drive. As officers approached, several suspects exited the residence and fled in different directions. One of the suspects, a 13-year-old juvenile male, was apprehended and was ordered detained by the Department of Juvenile Justice. That male was also the suspect named in the Kirby Lane burglary attempt.

A man discovered his South Finley Drive residence had been entered, while he was home alone, and his Apple Mac Book computer had been taken. Shortly afterwards, a subject knocked on his door and told the victim he knew where his computer was and that he would take him there so he could get it back. He followed the subject to a residence on Florida Avenue, and when he told the resident there why he was there, the resident retrieved his computer and returned it to him. Investigation uncovered the fact that the subject who had led the victim to Florida Avenue had entered the unlocked residence and had taken the laptop computer. Anthony Bernard JOHNSON, 49, Evans Street, was arrested and charged with Burglary.

The owner of , 2495 Jefferson Road, reported that two vehicles that had been parked in the lot at that location had been entered and the in-dash stereos had been taken. Two other vehicles had had the catalytic convertors stolen.
