Crime Blotter: Stealing stuff, including grocery carts

On March 21 members of the Drug Task Force responded to information that three males in front of a Waddell Street residence were in possession of a large quantity of cocaine and were also selling it.  Upon their arrival one subject fled on foot.  After a brief foot chase John Chambers was apprehended.  He complained of an arm injury sustained when he fell during the chase.  He was transported to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment.  Warrants will be secured for Chambers, charging him with Trafficking Cocaine, Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute within 1’000 feet of Public Housing, Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute within 1’000 feet of a School and Obstruction. A quantity of cocaine and cash were seized.  Tracey Lamont Jackson was arrested on an outstanding warrant.  The third subject was not charged and was released.

Around 9am on March 21 an officer responded to the area of Cedar Shoals Drive and Blackmor Court to a complaint of a truck with several shopping carts in the bed.  Upon arrival the officer located the truck and found carts from Kroger in the truck bed.  He made contact with Lynn Edward Stowers, who said he thought the carts had been thrown away.  The legs of the carts had been cut so they would fit in the truck.  After checking with Kroger personnel on College Station Road, it was learned they had not given anyone permission to take the carts and wanted to prosecute.  Stowers, 56, Blackmore Court, was arrested and charged with Theft of Lost/Mislaid Property and Criminal Damage Second Degree.  

Officers responded to a stabbing that had just occurred around 9:25am on March 21.  Contact was made with a College Avenue resident who said he was in a wooded area off Marlborough Downs Rd when he and Devante Lekeathan Baker began fighting.  He sustained stab wounds to his back and a laceration to his shoulder.  Baker fled the scene.  The victim was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center.  Contact was made with Baker later in the day and he was arrested.  Baker, 19, Foote McClelland Road, Colbert, was charged with Aggravated Assault.  

An attempt was made to enter a Candler Court residence around 2pm on March 21.  A woman said she was asleep in a back bedroom with her children when she heard a window break.  She saw a young black male with light to medium complexion and pulled back dreads at the window.  He had a towel wrapped around his arm.  

A woman reported that her Sycamore Drive residence was burglarized between 5am and 6am on March 21.  Food items, an EBT card, debit card, identification, and wallet were stolen.  The total value was $87. 

Between 12 noon on June 11, 2011, and 12 noon November 11, 2011, tool boxes containing assorted hand tools valued at $13,664 were stolen from the Army National Guard, 2190 Winterville Rd.  This was reported on March 21.

Around 2:50am on March 22, officers responded to a robbery that had just occurred at Strong Street and College Avenue.  A resident of Peabody Street said he was walking on Strong Street when three black males walked out of the gate at Bethel Midtown Village and were “messing” with him.  When he told them he did not want to talk to them, they started punching him and he fell to the ground.  They took his wallet from his pocket and ran back to Bethel.  The man said the suspects tried to sell him drugs before attacking him.  He was unable to provide descriptions of the suspects.  He sustained minor injuries but declined EMS. 

 Between 1pm on January 10 and 2pm on March 20 an air conditioner unit valued at $1,800 was stolen from a vacant Hidden Creek Drive residence owned by Powers Property, 240 Sycamore Drive.  This was reported on March 21.
