Driver Charged with Vehicular Homicide, DUI in Death of Pedestrian

Athens-Clarke Police: Kathy Maxey was crossing Athens Perimeter near Oconee Street Sunday night

A Bogart man has been arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide in the death of a pedestrian Sunday night.

Athens-Clarke County Police said Edwin Gaona, 20, struck and killed a woman while she tried to cross the inner loop of the Athens Perimeter. Police identified the victim as Kathy Maxey, 55.

Gaona also was charged with DUI/drugs.

According to the release, Gaona was driving a 2006 Infinti G35 southbound on the inner loop around 9:50 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, when he allegedly hit the woman near the Oconee Street intersection.

A passenger in his car was taken to the Athens Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
