False Robbery Story Lands Man in Jail

Man later tells police he feared being arrested for DUI.

Β

David Austin Berry, 21, was so drunk on April 27 that he passed out in his truck after going through the drive-in at Krystal.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, Berry then pulled over in the parking lot and slept for several hours. When he awoke, he couldn't find his wallet or his .357 Magnum revolver, so he fabricated a story to police about an armed robbery, fearing that if he told the truth he would be charged with DUI.

The story he told police was that a man climbed into his truck when he was at Krystal with some friends and robbed him at gunpoint, the story says. When police later confronted him about the fake story, he confessed, and was charged with falsely reporting a crime, a misdemeanor.
