Former UGA Athletes Indicted for Conspiring on Armed Robbery

A former basketball player and a former football player at UGA have been indicted by a Clarke County Grand Jury for conspiring to commit armed robbery in May, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald.

Athens Clarke County Police found Ricardo James Crawford, 25, and Demario Mayfield, 22, in an east Athens neighborhood on May 27, early in the morning, the story says. They were acting suspiciously, and they had with them handguns, masks and Latex gloves.

Police also found a cell phone with a text that indicated a robbery had already happened or was going to happen, the story says, quoting arrest warrants. The indictment filed on Tuesday charges the two men with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, loitering or prowling, and possession of marijuana.

Mayfield played basketball briefly at UGA, while Crawford was on the UGA football team. Crawford is being held in the Clarke County jail while Mayfield was released after posting a $11,200 bond.
