Skeletal Remains Found on Lexington Road near Dunlap Road in Athens

The information in this story comes from the Athens Clarke County Police Department.

On Thursday, November 14, at approximately 9:02am, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department was notified that workers, surveying Lexington Road in the area of Dunlap Road for future road expansion, discovered what at this time is believed to be human skeletal remains buried along the edge of the highway.

ACCPD officers and detectives, along with agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County Coroner's Office, responded to the area and excavation of the site is in progress. The remains will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for forensic examination.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.

The Athens Clarke County Police Department says: On November 14 at approximately 8:30pm authorities completed the exhumation of skeletal remains reported by surveyors earlier this date off Lexington Road near Dunlap Road. Based on the appearance of the remains, it appears they are of an animal and are not human. The remains will be examined further by an anthropologist to determine the species.
