Man Arrested After Falling Asleep in Street While Intoxicated

An Athens man was arrested for pedestrian under the influence Saturday after police found him sleeping in the middle of Berlin Street, according to an report.Β 

Anthony Zachary, 49, was found lying on his back in the middle of the street at about 4 a.m., snoring "very heavily," with his feet facing towards North Avenue. He smelled strongly of alcohol and had what appeared to be ketchup smeared over his shirt and right pants leg.

After the police officer woke him Zachary got up and told the police officer he had been drinking vodka. The man was slurring heavily and said that he was sleeping in the roadway, but had done nothing wrong. He also said that he was on medication. When the police officer asked what kind, he said "the kind that make you lay down in the road," according to the report.

Zachary was charged with pedestrian under the influence and was taken to Clarke County Jail, where he was served with a citation.
