Man Arrested After Punching, Choking Woman near Downtown Athens, Ga.

At 8:04pm on March 16, Athens Clarke County Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance near the Red and Black Package Store on Oconee Street.

A man and a woman were seen in an altercation inside a vehicle, but the vehicle drove away towards downtown before police arrived on the scene. Police made contact with the victim, who lives near Old Commerce Road and North Bluff Road. She had visible injuries where she had been punched and choked.

She stated she had been in an argument with Jonathan Toevoy Sorrells, Oak Hill Drive. She had tried to exit the vehicle, but Sorrells grabbed her and pulled her back into the vehicle and began hitting and choking her as they drove towards downtown. The woman was transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Police contacted Sorrells at his Oak Hill Drive residence and arrested him, charging him with Battery and False Imprisonment.
