News Nearby: Teen Goes on Spending Spree After $31K Banking Error

The money was deposited by mistake into his bank account.

A north Georgia bank says it will press charges if a teen doesn’t return the money that was deposited into his account by mistake.

The Athens-Banner Herald reported Thursday that $31,000 was deposited into the teen’s account by mistake because several people by the same name have accounts at the First Citizens Bank in Hull, located in Madison County. The teen allegedly pocketed $20,000 and spent $5,000 with his ATM card. The teen told the bank, and later the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, that the money was from an inheritance.

He told a deputy he’d settle the matter, but didn’t. The bank said it would prosecute if the matter isn’t resolved. No charges have been filed yet.
