Police: Athens Woman Allegedly Hit Cyclist and Left the Scene, Twice

A driver has been charged with DUI and other crimes for reportedly hitting a rider and then returning to the scene to flee again.

Police have charged an Athens woman with a DUI after she reportedly hit a bicyclist Monday around 7:25 p.m. and drove away, twice.

Oliver Thomas Quinn of Herman Street was riding his bicycle southbound on Robert Hardeman Road, according to police. He told officers a 2009 Dodge Charger was traveling behind him and struck him with the side mirror when the driver attempted to pass.

Police say the driver, Barbara Jean Williams, 48, of Athens fled the scene but returned, only to drive away again. Quinn attempted to stop her by standing in front of the vehicle but was unable to do so. He was able to catch the license plate number and give it to police.

Officers tracked the vehicle to a home on Nellie Mae Drive where Williams was identified as the driver. She was under the influence of several substances, according to Online Athens.

Williams was arrested and charged with DUI, hit and run and safe distance defined -- application to a bicyclist.

Online Athens reports Quinn sustained minor injuries and did not have to be taken to a hospital.
