Police ID Victim in Fatal Athens Motel Fire

Anita Dantzer Watson, 34, of Bogart died in the fire; man arrested in connection with the incident.

Athens-Clarke County Police have identified the victim in the fatal fire Monday morning at an Athens motel.

Police said Anita Dantzer Watson, 34, of Bogart died in the fire, which occurred around 1 a.m. Monday, May 19 at America’s Best Inn and Suites, 2715 Atlanta Highway.

Richard Ashley McGaha, who had been staying with the woman, has been charged (criminal damage) in connection with the fire.

Watson’s remains were sent to the GBI Crime Lab for a post mortem exam and autopsy, according to a police statement.

The investigation into the case by the police, fire and coroner’s offices continues.
