Second Athens Intersection Gets Red-Light Camera System

Cameras will look for violations at the intersection of Barnett Shoals and Gaines School roads.

Beginning Friday, June 13, you will have 30 days to start paying better attention when rolling through the intersection of Barnett Shoals and Gaines School roads in Athens.

The Athens-Clarke Police Department said Thursday it is enhancing its red-light safety program by adding a camera system at the intersection. Another camera system is already located at the intersection of W Broad Street at Alps Road/Hawthorne Avenue.

Police said a 30-day warning period begins Friday at the Barnett Shoals/Gaines School intersection.

“During this time, the new cameras will capture still images and video of red-light running violations. Warnings will be mailed to the registered owners of vehicles observed on camera running the red light,” the department said in a press release.

After 30 days, fines of $70 will be assessed for running the light.

• Southbound Gaines School Road @ Barnett Shoals Road 
• Eastbound Barnett Shoals Road @ Gaines School Road
