Beginning Friday, June
13, you will have 30 days to start paying better attention when rolling through
the intersection of Barnett Shoals and Gaines School roads in Athens.
The Athens-Clarke Police Department said Thursday it is enhancing its red-light safety program by adding a camera system at the intersection. Another camera system is already located at the intersection of W Broad Street at Alps Road/Hawthorne Avenue.
Police said a 30-day warning period begins Friday at the Barnett Shoals/Gaines School intersection.
“During this time, the new cameras will capture still images and video of red-light running violations. Warnings will be mailed to the registered owners of vehicles observed on camera running the red light,” the department said in a press release.
After 30 days, fines of $70 will be assessed for running the light.
Cameras will be located:
• Southbound Gaines School Road @ Barnett Shoals Road
• Eastbound Barnett Shoals Road @ Gaines School Road
