Silver Thief "Knows What He's Doing," Say ACC Police

A professional cat burglar is entering upscale homes and stealing select sterling silver flatware and other pieces.

He carefully cut window panes and crept into houses without waking anyone, then picked through collections to find the sterling silver, leaving behind the silver plate.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, the thief who burgled several Athens homes is believed to be the same person who lifted silver from Buckhead mansions. And he may be linked to similar thefts in North and South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.

In Athens, the story says, several homes were hit during a few days:

* on July 8, a Milledge Circle home lost $5,000 worth of silver flatware, bowls and cups;

*on July 15, a  Red Oak Trail home lost $20,000 worth of sterling silver, the story says

*on July 16, $5,000 worth of sterling silver flatware was stolen from a house on Tallassee Oaks Trail.

*on July 12, the same person is thought to have tried to break into a house on Post Oak Trail but left when an alarm went off.
