The 23-year-old son of U.S. Rep. Paul Broun was arrested in Athens Saturday morning after police found marijuana in his car.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported Paul Collins Broun III was stopped in a University of Georgia parking lot near South Lumpkin Street after 4 a.m. Saturday, 10. He was charged with possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce, and failure to obey a traffic signal.

Police say an officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana after stopping the 2014 Cadillac driven by Broun. Both Broun and his passenger denied there was any pot, but a search found marijuana in a bag in the center console and residue in a film canister in Broun’s pocket.

Rep. Broun, who represents House District 10, is a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Geez. I would hate to be this kid. Its pretty clear that the father has no control over a college aged son away from home on his own in the year 2014. Kids are going to do what they want to do under these circumstances. The bigger issue is why is anyone wasting law enforcement resources on this to begin with. Write him a ticket and send him home. Better yet just send him home and can all the pot hysteria.

Poor kid. To have Broun as a father is bad enough, but to be busted by the Athens Po Po on a piddly-ass marijuana charge on top of it. I would say that most of us have taken a toke at least once in our lives, and it was sheer dumb luck that we weren't busted. I blame Reagan and his war on drugs.
