Suspect Tries to Take Police Officer's Gun

An intoxicated and supposedly coked up suspect in a domestic dispute fought with an Athens Clarke County Police Officer and tried to take his weapon, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald.

Rashon Otis Bacon, 36, told arresting officers they would have to kill him before he would go to jail, the story says, quoting from an incident report. Officer Yaakov Baum had hold of one of Bacon’s wrists, preparing to handcuff him, when he felt the suspect’s hand on his gun.

The two struggled, the story says, and Baum’s partner got involved in the fight, with Baum fighting with one hand free and keeping the other on his gun. Not until more police officers arrived was Bacon subdued and arrested.

The two incidents—the domestic dispute and the struggle with police—resulted in numerous charges against Bacon, according to the newspaper story. These include felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, attempted removal of a firearm from a police officer and battery, as well as simple battery, obstruction of a 911 call and theft by taking, police said.
