After arriving, police spoke with the two victims. One told an officer that they had been walking home from AthFest in the direction of Buena Vista when a man approached them. The women had taken roads they "believed to be 'safe.'"

When the man approached them, one of the women screamed and ran, while the other tried to "play it cool." The man then held out a knife resembling  a switchblade toward her and told her to "give him 'what she had.'" The woman then handed him about $20, after which the man ran towards Milledge Avenue.
