Use Caution When Purchasing Online

With the increased presence of online buy/sell/trade communities and auction sites, the Athens-Clarke County Police would like to remind citizens to use caution when making purchases or selling items.  

• Meet in a public spot preferably where there are surveillance cameras or a larger number of witnesses around. 

• Do not meet buyers or sellers during hours of darkness. 

• Do not bring cash with you. 

• Do not wire funds to buyers or sellers - anyone asking you to do so is likely a scammer. 

• Do not allow the buyer or seller into your vehicle or your home. 

• Tell a friend or family member where you are going and consider having someone accompany you. 

Report any fraud or scam attempts to the site administrator or contact your local law enforcement agency.
