Adjustments Possible in Downtown Development

Jo Ann Chitty says she's comfortable with a 90-day demolition delay.

Selig Enterprises vice president Jo Ann Chitty is no stranger to Athens.

In the early 2000's, she was the first director of the University of Georgia's Real Estate Foundation, a private entity that funded various construction projects around campus. The projects--such as parking decks and residence halls--all were to pay for themselves by generating revenue.

Another project in which Chitty was involved was the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences on south campus, which was built with a combination of private and public monies.

Like other university officials, Chitty had her eye on the . They hoped to expand the campus toward the east, but that transaction didn't happen.

Now, it appears the land may be secured for her current employer. In a story in today's Athens Banner Herald, she said the 90-day moratorum is going to allow Selig "to get to know the community better," Chitty is meeting with local businessmen, and community leaders, but she doesn't plan to meet with members of People for a Better Athens, a group on the edge of downtown Athens.
