Democratic Challenger Spencer Frye defeated Rep. Keith Heard, a 20 year veteran of the Georgia House, in Tuesday's Democractic primary. He took 55.38 percent of the vote to Heard's 44.62 percent.

Throughout the campaign, Frye, director of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, repeatedly brought up the issue of Heard's house in Fayette County as an indication that the veteran legislator was out of touch with constitutents and the Athens community.

Frye was one of several candidates across the state who signed a pledge to support legislation limiting gifts to lobbyists. Heard didn't sign the pledge. Frye also stressed his daily involvement with the community, through his work and also his children and their activities.

Frye will face Republican Carter Kessler in November or the seat.
