University of Georgia System Chancellor says he will defend higher education from its detractors.

According to the of the University of Georgia System, higher education in the state is under attack. In years past, the Georgia legislature used to pony up millions for its many colleges and universities, and many of its members were loyal UGA graduates.

Now, says Hank Huckaby, a few lawmakers think the university system is “too independent” from the rest of state government, according to a story in today’s Athens Banner Herald. Some question the value of a college education.

Huckaby, who is participating in an education conference at the , worked in state government, held many positions at UGA and served one session as a state representative from Oconee County before becoming chancellor. He intends to defend higher education from its detractors, he said.
