Republican Doug Collins Coasts To Victory for the 9th District of the U.S. Congress

Democrat Jody Cooley captured most of the votes in Democrat-leaning Athens, Ga.

It's no surprise that Republican Doug Collins handily won his bid for a seat in the U.S. Congress, winning the 9th District against Democrat Jody Cooley, a Gainesvile attorney, by a wide margin.

After all, the 9th District is the most Republican district in Georgia. It does include a smidge of Athens, just as tomato sauce includes a smidge of bay leaf.

In Athens Clarke County, Cooley captured 3,290 votes, compared to 1,304 for Collins.

In the 10th Congressional District, where Republican incumbent Paul Broun was unopposed, voters in Athens wrote in Charles Darwin. The name was in part a dig against Broun for his blasting evolution as "lies from the pit of Hell." Results of the write-in campaign won't be known until Saturday, but supporters believe the votes could send at least a message to Broun.
