Over the years Dr. Doug Bachtel has been not only a gentle giant in our community, but a world renowned demographer, educator, and friend to many. His strength and determination, along with his understanding and desire for the best outcome for all Georgian economies is legendary. Never one to hold his peace, superceeding all challenges, both personal and professional, he has never uttered one foul word about another human being in my presence for all the years I have known him. (Not ever.)
Today, as I conclude reading rhe news and completing the mail for the day, I thought of my friend, our friend, and I was compelled to share these few words about a living legend living in our community. What a wonderful man, what a wonderful citizen.

When I think of a community too busy to hate, I need think no further than to think of Doug Bachtel, and I realize my paning for gold has not created a huge economic onslaught, but has created and developed an opportunity, for me at least, to have been befriended by a mountain of a man.
