Clarke County Schools Awarded Grants For Excellence

The Foundation for Excellence in Public Education will award up to $12,800 in grants to six schools in the district.

The Foundation for Excellence in Public Education has announced that six schools in the Clarke County School District will receive a total of $12,800 in grants to help fund innovative learning projects, a media release from the district said.

The grants are funded from $4,600 in permanent endowments, as well as from $8,200 in gifts and donations. The grants are given annually.

The six grants awarded to Clarke County Schools are:

  • The Eve Carson Memorial Service Learning Grant, a $1,000 award to Yvonne Manley of . Third grade students will purchase, collect and deliver books to children who visit the local food bank.
  • The  Carol Ann Colquitt Special Education Grant, a $500 award to Sandi Rafal of that will provide technology for classroom use to enhance the learning of students with attention difficulties.
  • The Todd Cooper Memorial Grant for Technology and Equipment, a $600 award to Dawn Meyers, director of school social work. The grant will provide iPads to support student services casework in the district to increase productivity of social workers to better assist students.
  • The Dr. Jimmy Morris Memorial Fine Arts Grant, a $500 award to Melanie Powers of Whitehead Road Elementary and Linda Moon of Cedar Shoals High School. At Whitehead Road, students will learn about the history of African music, the music of slaves in America and how other forms of music were developed. Cedar Shoals will use the grant to perform at Carnegie Hall in April 2012.
  • The Lane Turner Norton Literacy Grant, a $500 award to Deirdre Sugiuchi of that will be used to purchase additional graphic novels.
  • The Charlotte and Claude Williams American History grant, a $1,000 award to Emily Larson of that will be used to form book groups focused on historical events.

In addition, the FFE also awarded the Arthur Moog Middleton Memorial Media Center Grant to the media centers at and , which will provide $250 to each school for the purchase of challenging books.
