Dawg Jog to Benefits Dogs....and Cats

The Pre-Vet Med Club at UGA sponsors the jog, which benefits the Athens Area Humane Society.

Runners, joggers and walkers are invited to take part in the ninth annual “Dawg Jog,” sponsored by the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Club at the University of Georgia. The run, which will be held April 13, 2013, and follow a route through the UGA campus, benefits the Athens Area Humane Society. Participants are invited to bring their dogs along for the fun.

“This is an event that provides lots of fun for everyone who participates—people and dogs—and also benefits a great cause,” said Kaitlyn Koenning, president of the UGA Pre-Vet Club. “We appreciate the support of the Athens and UGA community and invite everyone to take part.”

The Pre-Vet club at UGA is a student organization with approximately 150 members who are interested in future careers in veterinary medicine or related fields. Each year the club selects a philanthropy to support. For 2012-2013, the designated philanthropy is the Athens Area Humane Society.

Founded in 1982, AAHS is a private, nonprofit organization and Athens-Clarke County’s oldest and largest animal welfare organization. Each year, the staff of AAHS rescue and care for 1,000 animals in danger of being euthanized. In addition, AAHS annually performs more than 4,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year to prevent pet overpopulation, provides low cost vaccinations to more than 1,200 animals, and educates the public concerning animal welfare and pet owner responsibility through school visits and social outreach.

“We are pleased to have Athens Area Humane Society as our designated philanthropy for the 2012-2013 school year,” said Brigid Burns, vice president of the UGA Pre-Vet Club. “They provide needed shelter for animals and also work hard to prevent more animals from being in need.”
