Education Sales Tax Passes in Athens

Voters approved renewing the E-SPLOST by nearly a 3-to-1 margin.

Athens-Clarke voters gave the thumbs-up on Tuesday to a penny sales tax to support education in the county.

The , known as E-SPLOST, was renewed for another five years, through July 2017. With all precincts reporting, the unofficial total was 4,008 yes votes to 1,402 no votes.

Among the projects the anticipated $105 million tax is scheduled to pay for are building two new elementary schools to ease overcrowding on both the east and west sides of the county.
