Georgia Department of Education Names Three Clarke County Schools “Reward Schools”

Three schools in Athens had the highest performance or the biggest academic gains by students in the last three years.

The Georgia Department of Education recently named three Clarke County schools “Reward Schools” – that is, schools with the highest performance or the biggest academic gains by students in the last three years.

“Overall, what we want to see in our schools is that our students continue to grow and that we are challenging them. I am pleased to see that these three schools are being recognized for the work that is representative of what is occurring throughout our district,” said Superintendent Philip D. Lanoue.

The three Clarke County schools honored as “High Progress Schools” within the “Reward Schools” category are:

  • Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School
  • Chase Street Elementary School (second year in a row)
  • Coile Middle School (second year in a row)
A “High Progress School” is a Title I school among the top 10% of Title I schools in the state that are making the most progress in improving the performance of the “all students” group over a number of years on the statewide assessments. At the high school level, it is among the Title I schools that are making the most progress in increasing the graduation rate.
