Local Schools Go Green

They received Green Schools designations for their efforts at environmental education.

The Green School Committee has recognized twelve local schools for their participation in the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government-sponsored Green School Program.

These include: , Alps Road Elementary, , , , Clarke Middle, Cleveland Road Elementary, , J.J. Harris Charter Elementary, , St. Joseph Catholic School, , , and .

All of them have achieved Green School status through their dedication to environmental education during the 2010-2011 school year.

Each school will receive the ACC Green School driveway sign or renewal sticker and teacher certificates. First time Green Schools also will receive $100 from the board of directors of Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful Board.

To be recognized as a Green School, at least five classrooms in each school must participate in five environmental education activities. In the designated schools, 25 environmental education activities were documented throughout the academic school year in order to achieve Green School status.

The program is sponsored by the ACC Transportation and Public Works Department, ACC Public Utilities Department, / Recycling Division, and Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful. It was created in 2004 to provide environmental education resource support for teachers.

ACC staff members provide a monthly newsletter, classroom presentations and free resources to help encourage educators to teach environmental responsibility to students.
