School District Could Get $30K from AT&T for Cedar Shoals Cell Tower

There's some debate about how the money will be allocated to schools.

The Clarke County School District will received $2,500 a month from AT&T if the company is allowed to build a cellphone tower beside the Cedar Shoals High School baseball field.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, the company will also pay $10,000 up front, increase the monthly payments by 2 percent annually. It will also turn over half of any fees it might receive if another cellphone company buys a transmitter slot on the tower.

The tower would help provide better cell phone and Internet reception for its Eastside customers, the company says. The story says the school board will vote on the matter during its monthly voting meeting on Thursday.
