Athens offers many Fitness Centers to help you get fit in the New Year.

It seemed like a good idea at the time to munch on those Sugar cookies or to eat that second helping of mom's mashed potatoes. By the time Christmas is over, the average person gains 5 pounds from their holiday indulgences. Why not get a leg up on your weight loss and join any one of these fitness centers? Your body will thank you once spring rolls around.

Athens Personal Fitness You will find people of every shape and size at this local gym that focuses on personal training. You might like their Super Circuit that offers a group exercise class which includes weights, aerobics, and stretching. The cost for the Curcuit is $10 per class, members and non-members welcome!

Bodyplex This gym that caters to students and professionals, and it seems like an athlete's paradise. They offer amenities such as locker rooms, a pro shop, Cardio equipment, a group fitness room, raquetball room, cycling room, free weights and circuit equipment, personal training, and a woman's only gym. They even cater to parents with Kidsplex, an onsite supervised childcare facility. Be sure to take advantage of the Friday Night Date night offer.

GA Elite Fitness Athletes flock to this fitness center because they offer fitness and performance classes without commercial machines in the class. Instead, you will be using body weight, Kettle bells, and dumbbells. For those who like to shake their way to fitness, try a Zumba class. Their Boot Camp will get you outdoors and pushing yourself to new levels of working out. They even offer fitness classes for kids such as sports technique, sports conditioning, and instructing exercise for various youth sports.

Fitness @ Five There's something for everyone at this Five Points gym. With equipment like Life Fitness Cardio, Selectorized Equipment, Multi-Jungle 8, Hammer Strength Equipment, Hammer Strength freeweights, and dumbells. They also offer Sunvision Elite tanning beds and a full line of tanning products. Grab a frozen drink after a great workout at The Smoothie Bar where you can get custom made smoothies. One great feature is that they don't have loud music playing in the gym, so you can expect a calm enviroment. They are open 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

The Omni This fitness club's "members are made up of regular people who want to attain a better more healthy lifestyle," according to its website. With a country club style atmosphere, you will find luxury locker rooms complete with complimetery towel service, a lounge, dry sauna, and steam room. They offer over 100 cardiovascular machines with perosnal flat screen televisions. There are seperate studios for group Cycling, Mind/Body, and Omni Fight Club. They offer a ladies only facilities and a supervised area for children. This place has the works, and a list of amenities that could go and on and on.

Athens YMCA This is the mecca for families who want to get healthy. The facilities include three gymnasiums, an indoor and outdoor pool, health club locker rooms, spin room, aerobics room, woman only workout room, fitness center, youth room, and a martial arts room. That's just what's inside. Step outside to an 8 lane soft surface track, Roller Rink (street & roller hockey), Mountain Bike Trails, Hiking/Jogging Trails , Athletic Fields, and a Children's Playground. They also offer excellent suprevised childcare and scholarships for families needing a little financial help.

Athens YWCO This eastside facility is geared towards families as well. Here you will find moms working out alongside health savvy senior citizens.They offer programs such as an aquatic swim class in the indoor pool or strength and curcuit training in their work out room. Mind and body classes are also offered, such as Hatha Yoga and Pilates. An school program serving many Clarke County public schools sets this location apart from the rest.

Total Training Center According to this gym's website, "You won't find high fashion or body builders - just people dedicated to getting the exercise they need." In the gym, you can choose from free weights or machines, and you can get professional help in strength & conditioning, functional balance techniques, sports-specific training, post injury rehabilitation, pre & post natal training, and overall nutritional programs. Step into the Yoga Studio and roll out your mat for power yoga, hatha yoga, pilates, or fluid power classes. Be sure to take advantage of their Power Lunch Program where they've teamed up with . You can get a good workout during lunch and then take a meal prepared by Big City Bread back to the office with you. The cost is $15 for the class and the lunch.
