UGA Student to Try Field Goal for Prizes in National Championship Game

Jonathan Pahlas won a drawing to boot a 40-yarder for $100,000 in booty.

There's still a chance this bowl season for a kicker to make a clutch field goal for glory.

It didn't work out for Blair Walsh, who, despite becoming the SEC's all-time leading scorer during last week's Outback Bowl, is the talk of the town for missing a field goal try that would have beaten Michigan State in the game's first overtime.

Now comes Jonathan Pahlas, a UGA marine sciences graduate student, who won a drawing to attempt a 40-yard field goal for $100,000 in prizes at halftime's Monday night's National Championship game between SEC rivals LSU and Alabama.

Pahlas, who's never kicked much of anything, will have 60 seconds to make up to five attempts to win a home makeover, an RV and a boat, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

He's been practicing at since he found out about his opportunity.

“It hasn’t really hit me,” Pahlas, from Acworth, told The Red and Black. “I know I’ll be real nervous when it happens. I’m nervous enough when it’s just my friends watching trying to help me out, so I’ve just tried to come out here [to practice] and hope there are people around to watch me fail now, so I feel OK when I make it later.”
