Rain, Rain and More Rain in Athens, Ga., For This Week

What's your favorite rain-related song?

How much rain have we had? A lot. A whole lot.

As of July 14, we had had twice as much rain as we had last year at this time. So instead of a parched 19.20, we've had 39.20 inches. That's 14 inches over the normal rainfall of 25.33 inches.

University of Georgia climatologist Pam Knox, who works in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, says this summer thunderstorms are moving into Athens from the Southeast to the Northwest. Which isn't the case in the cooler months, when rain moves west to east.

The heavy rains that fell over the weekend were likely the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal, Knox said.

The forecast for the next week? Rain, rain and more rain. It's scattered and isolated thunderstorms coming for the next seven days.
