"ObamaCare" and the LGBT Community

Peace family,

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) aka "ObamaCare" has been demonized since it was first conceived.  It was even used to justify this year's 16 day government shutdown, which resulted in a $24 billion loss to our fragile economy.

Yet in spite of all the haters, ACA is still moving forward.  Though it has gotten off to a rough start, they are many benefits that people will soon come to enjoy, some for the very first time.

In addition to providing health care for many Americans who are currently without coverage, ACA will provide much needed support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

ACA will help end the discrimination that LGBT people have long suffered in the health care system through new policy protections and coverage for illnesses that disproportionately impact our community.

This this law is also of particular interest to us given the fact that University of Georgia and many other oppressive companies in Georgia still uphold discrimination against LGBT employees by not offering equal benefits that cover our families.

This is why I have coordinated an event through Under the Rainbow where the Health Initiative and Georgia Equality will be on campus to present a program called "How the Affordable Care Act will Impact the LGBTQ Community?"

This event is sponsored by UGA's Office of Institutional Diversity, University Health Center Diversity Committee, Athens PRIDE, UGA OUTlaws, Under the Rainbow and Our Hope Metropolitan Community Church.
