UGA Employee Arrested for Allegedly Hacking into Co-Workers' Computers

An arrest isn't the same thing as a conviction.

A UGA employee was arrested Thursday for allegedly hacking into the email accounts of two co-workers in the chemistry department, where she works.

According to the Athens Banner Herald, Rebecca Jane Pruett, 29, faces 34 counts of hacking. She surrendered at the Oconee County Jail and was released on a $5,000 bond.

The story says that Pruett, the daughter of noted chemist Henry "Fritz" Schaefer, is part of an investigation into charges of nepotism. She works in an office where her father runs the Center for Computational Chemistry.

Rather than guess at the motive for the alleged hacking, UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson told the newspaper that it was basically a workplace dispute.
