A Family In Need

Athens family loses home to fire

On December 18, Chris Mardis and his two children arrived home to find the home he had built for them 12 years earlier engulfed in flames. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the home was destroyed. “Everything was lost, Christmas included,” says Mardis’ sister Jana. “There will be no Christmas for them this year. I’m looking to change that.”

Bring on the power of social media! Jana has set up a Facebook event page seeking assistance for the family. “They are pretty much in need of everything.”

The children, who attend Madison County schools, are in need of clothing. Jada is 12 years old and wears a junior size 5 in pants; medium tops and 7-1/2 shoes. Zane, who is 8 years old, wears a 9-10 shirt, 11-12 pants and shoes are a size 5.

“I know this is an extremely hard time to ask for help with it being the holidays,” says Jana. She believes, however, that with the help of others, and maybe a dose of Christmas Spirit, this could be a most memorable holiday for her brother and his family.

As a community, many have already stepped forward with donations of clothing, Publix gift certificates, and housewares. If you would like to help, please go to their Facebook page for information on what’s needed and contact information to help this precious family.
