Athens Today-November 8, election day!

Get your vote on early today.

1. Today is election day, and most of us in Athens have only one thing to approve or dismiss: , which will fund improvements to the public school facilities and buy technology. In Winterville, voters will elect a new mayor and council members as well.

2. Hungry for an interesting lunch? is holding the 3rd Annual Chili Cook-off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Money raised through a $5 charge for the chili—and $1 to vote—goes to the United Way of Northeast Georgia. It's going to be held in the Athena E Ballroom.

3. Today and tomorrow, eat dinner and supper at the Baxter Street and the owners will donate 20% of the proceeds to   BUT - the diner must present the attached coupon at checkout.

4. The Clarke County Mentor Program will hold a training for mentors to be matched with students in the Clarke County School District who would benefit from having a role model, listener and friend. Today, from 6 to 8 pm at the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce on Hancock Avenue. For more information, check the website.

5. Guess who’s coming to town? And before Thanksgiving? Yup, the Jolly One. Georgia Square Mall will host a “Santa Arrival Parade” on Thursday. The community of Athens is invited to participate in this Holiday event. A parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Sears parking lot and continue around the Mall to the Food Court entrance. Children can escort Santa to his Holiday home away from home on the mall’s lower level near Macy’s. Come early to avoid the crowds.
