YMCA Kicks Off Journey Campaign
Annual fund-raising efforts to go directly to youth programs
The Athens YMCA recently kicked off its annual fund-raising campaign. The Journey Campaign was held at and featured guest speakers, Yvette Getch and LaTasha Hardy. Both ladies are Y Moms whose children have attended afterschool and day camp programs for a number of years. Also at the kickoff were 50 YMCA volunteers and staff members, who will be making calls for donations. By the end of the year, the campaign hopes to raise $150,000 from individuals and businesses in the community.
Each dollar given to the Journey Campaign goes directly to making memberships and services available to those in financial need and to enhance youth programs.
"This campaign raises funds for families and children experiencing financial hardships and gives them an opportunity to be a part of YMCA programs," says Kirk Eich, Executive Director. "The Athens YMCA is committed to strengthening the foundations of our community. For that to happen, we need to ensure that all those who want to participate in YMCA activities have the ability to do so."

Last year, the Athens YMCA provided over $160,000 in financial assistance to more than 1,000 children in afterschool and summer camp programs. Funds were raised through the annual campaign, foundation grants and special events. This year, with the help of Journey Campaign contributions, the YMCA hopes to underwrite more than $200,000 in financial assistance.
Gifts of any size are welcome. A $90 donation makes it possible for a child to attend a week of summer camp; a $150 gift provides swim lessons for three children; a $500 gift allows three kids to learn skills, sportsmanship and teamwork through participation in youth sports; a $1,000 donation enables a child to be a part of the afterschool program for the entire school year. All of these programs provide an opportunity for children to make new friends and strengthen core values.

"With the help of the community, we are certain these goals can be met."
Heading the Journey Campaign are Ashley Smith, chairman, and Stephanie Skinner, vice chairman. Division leaders are Marilou Braswell, Lindsey Daniel, Emily Kleiber, Jennifer Richardson and Jacqueline Shirley.
