Races, Meetings and More Coming This Week in Athens

Lots of chances to run and opportunities to volunteer.

There’s still time to register for two upcoming races, both of which either close online registration or increase the race fee on Tuesday, October 1.

The Junior League of Athens sponsors the first annual “Bookin’ It” 15k on Saturday, October 5th. Proceeds benefit literacy efforts in Athens. You can click here for more information. Online registration closes October 1.

The second race is ATH Half, a half marathon benefitting AthFest Educates! The entrance fee jumps from $70 to $80 on October 1, so register today if you haven’t already done so. The race is October 20th, and it winds its way through downtown, Cobbham, Five Points and the UGA campus. For more information, click here.

The Athens Clarke County Mayor and Commission meet Tuesday in City Hall chambers at 7pm. Among the items on the agenda are financing for ice capabilities at the Classic Center and approving a list of events getting funding from the Athens Downtown Development Authority.

There's still time to volunteer for Hands on Northeast Georgia's Rivers Alive! cleanup next Saturday. Last year's volunteers hauled out more than 300 tires and a ton of garbage.

The fall Kindermarket sale is this week, October 3rd to 5th, at the YMCA on Hawthorne. You can find gently used children's clothes, shoes, toys, books and DVDs, as well as household furnishings and furniture. Bring a garbage cart in which to haul away your purchases.

Writer Jeff Kinney won't be there, but the Wimpy Kid Hard Luck Truck will be at Avid Bookshop on Wednesday, October 2nd, from 5 to 7pm. Free Wimpy Kid goodies will be available.

On October 1, from 3:30 to 4:30pm in Mahler Hall of the Georgia Center, World-renowned geneticist Claude Bouchard, of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, will give the fall 2013 George H. Boyd Distinguished Lecture. The tiels is "The Obesity Epidemic: Reflection on Contentious Issues."
