Wild Rumpus Parades Through Downtown Athens on Saturday Night

Here are a few events you might want to know about this week.

On Monday, a group meets at the Athens Area Council on Aging to give support to non-professional caregivers taking care of a friend or family member. The group provides support, practical advice and community resources.

On Tuesday, October 22, your Kindergartner through Fifth Grader can, for $1, carve a pumpkin and hear really scary stories at the East Athens Community Center. The goose bumps start at 5pm.

At 4pm on Thursday, October 23rd,
 James Thompson, a faculty member from Chapel Hill, will give a lecture in Park Hall entitled "Jane Austen, Sociologist." The talk is part of the Georgia Colloquium in 18th- and 19th-Century British Literature.

Want to learn how to identify trees? Meet at the boardwalk parking lot of Oconee Forest at 5pm on Wednesday and learn something useful. 

On October 24, Melanie Joy, a psychologist, professor, author and speaker who teaches psychology and sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, is giving a talk based on her award-winning book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism." The talk is 7pm in Room 148 of the Miller Learning Center and is sponsored by Speak Out for Species.

The Harvest Festival is Thursday, October 24, at the Lyndon House Arts Center. It's a celebration of old time crafts and arts and features more than 50 live demonstrations. It runs from 9:30am to 1pm.

Saturday, at 7pm, is the Wild Rumpus Parade through downtown Athens. If you wear a costume, you can be in the parade! If not, just stand on Clayton and enjoy the dazzling array of costumes.
