Reminiscent of an Old World salon, The Globe restaurant and bar in downtown Athens has been a favorite meeting place for locals and students alike since 1989. With creaky heart pine floorboards and a heavy front door that was salvaged from a mansion in Macon, the building's character is decidedly old and venerable. The space is large and offers ample seating with booths, tables, leather sofas and patio tables. Many fine varieties of beer are available on tap (like Bass and Hoegaarden) and some malts (such as Glenfidditch and Talsiker) may be found here, as well as wine and liquor. The lunch and dinner menus are simple yet varied, with the expected burgers and fries but also surprisingly tasty soups, quesadillas, pastas and even red velvet cake. A rather grand staircase leads to an upstairs area where community gatherings, such as poetry readings, chess club meetings and soccer tournament parties are held. The upstairs space may be rented for private parties.
